Made for a Welsh Summer: Choosing Garden Furniture That Lasts
The first proper warm weekend of the year tends to arrive without much warning, and South Wales gardens fill up fast. A good outdoor set turns a patio into another room of the house — somewhere to eat, to read, to gather when the sun finally obliges. But garden furniture has a harder life than anything indoors, facing sun, rain and the occasional sideways shower all in the same afternoon. Choosing well means thinking about how it copes when you are not using it, as much as how it looks when you are.
Match the furniture to how you'll use the space
Before anything else, picture the typical day in your garden. A family that eats outside most summer evenings wants a proper dining set with chairs that pull in and out comfortably. A couple who want somewhere to unwind with a coffee will get far more from a relaxed lounge set with deep cushions. And if you entertain, a modular corner set earns its space by seating a crowd and rearranging when you need it to.
Measure your space and leave room to walk around a set with chairs pulled out. Outdoor furniture almost always looks smaller in a wide-open garden than it did in the showroom, so it is worth being generous.
Materials: what survives a Welsh climate
This is where the real decision lies, because our weather is not gentle on furniture. The main options each have their place:
- All-weather rattan — woven synthetic fibre over a powder-coated aluminium frame. It looks like natural rattan but shrugs off rain and UV, and it is light enough to move. The aluminium frame is the key detail: it will not rust, unlike cheaper steel alternatives.
- Aluminium — light, genuinely rust-proof and increasingly handsome in contemporary designs. Ideal if you want to leave a set out all season without fussing over it.
- Hardwood such as teak or acacia — beautiful and naturally weather-resistant thanks to its own oils. It will silver gracefully over time if left, or keep its warm tone with an occasional treatment. A classic that ages well.
- Cane and indoor-outdoor weaves — for conservatories, garden rooms and covered terraces, where you want the relaxed look without full exposure to the elements.
As with sofas indoors, the cheapest set is rarely the most economical. Thin tubular frames bend, low-grade weave frays in sunlight, and a bargain bought one April is often in the skip by the next. A well-made set carries you through many summers — which, spread across the years, makes it the better buy by some distance.
A little care goes a long way
Even the toughest furniture lasts longer with minimal looking after. Bring cushions indoors or into a storage box when they are not in use — it is damp, not cold, that ruins them. A breathable cover over the frame through the wettest months keeps the worst off. And a wipe-down at the start and end of the season is usually all that is needed to keep a set looking new. None of it is onerous; it simply rewards the furniture that was worth buying in the first place.
See it before the sun does
Garden furniture is best chosen early, before the first heatwave empties the showrooms and the good ranges sell through. Our Cardiff and Swansea showrooms display outdoor and cane ranges you can sit on and judge for yourself — the weight of a frame, the comfort of a cushion, the quality of a weave up close. Our team can talk you through what stands up best to a South Wales summer and arrange delivery and assembly so your set arrives ready to use. Come and find the one that will still be earning its place on the patio years from now.
